Number Line Guide

The Number Line represents values, intervals, and counting sequences on a board. You can access presets, build up from an empty line or generate a specific range and interval.

Finding the Number Line

The Number Line is available by clicking on the large + button of the left side menu on the board, and looking for the fence shaped icon labelled “Number Line”.

Starting a number line

There are three starting points:

  • Presets — two pre-made number lines are available to place right away.
  • Empty line — places a line with two ticks, and everything else added manually.
  • Generate — opens a settings panel for setting the range and interval before the line appears.

Which one to use depends mostly on whether you know what exact range you’re looking to make, or if you’d like to work in real-time to build the line.

Working with a number line

These actions apply to any number line already on the board.

Appearance and direction
Click the line to change its colour and arrow direction, or to add a custom tick and pointer.

Resizing
Click and drag any corner to resize the whole line.

Extending and shortening
Click and drag the left or right edge to lengthen or shorten the line. Ticks regenerate or hide automatically to match the new length. This can be a useful way to reveal more information during lesson delivery.

Editing numbers
Click any individual number to edit or remove it. If a tick doesn’t have any number yet, click on the small blue square to type one in.

Editing ticks
Double-click a tick to add a number, change its colour, or change its height. Hold Shift to select and edit multiple ticks at once.

Adding a tick
Click the third icon to add a tick anywhere on the line.

Adding a pointer
Click the downward arrow icon (fourth icon) to add a pointer anywhere on the line. The pointer moves independently of any tick, which keeps it available for marking a position without changing a tick's value.

Building from an empty line

  1. Click on the simple line (third option) from the menu and place it on the board.
  2. Click and select the third icon to add a tick.
  3. A dotted line will appear, and click anywhere on the line to confirm the tick's position.
  4. Click the blue square on the tick to enter a number.
  5. Select the tick again, and press + in the toolbar. A second tick will generate automatically, spaced from where the first one was placed.
  6. Enter a number for the second tick.
  7. Optionally, of there are at least two ticks placed, you can click and drag the line longer. Further ticks will generate automatically to match the existing spacing — no need to number them for this to work.

Building from an empty line allows you some real-time flexibility during the lesson to work out problems with your students.

Connecting other tools

Arrows and Answer Boxes can be placed and linked to a point on a number line.

Drag any of the tools from the menu toward the line and watch for the snapping cross marks, which indicate a valid connection point. Once linked, an asset stays attached to its point as the line is resized or moved.

Generating a number line

For a specific setup in mind, Generating a number line is a powerful option.

  1. Click Generate, then click on the board to place a Pending number line.
  2. A settings panel appears in the bottom right of the screen.
  3. Set the starting and ending numbers first — this is the most useful place to begin.
  4. Set the interval each tick should represent. By default, each tick represents an interval of 1.
  5. Adjust until the settings look right, then click Generate to apply them. The size and scale can still be adjusted afterward, the same as any other number line.

Note: Nothing is placed on the board until the “Generate” button is clicked. If you step away to work on something else, the line stays on the board greyed out, labelled "Pending."
